now i have yet to see the Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland but i seriously doubt Avril Lavigne can top any of these gems...

Fabricated Show Review by Chart Attack, Blasted by Cadence Weapon: A Call For A More Accountable Media
Read the full article at Toronto Life
So I'm mostly excited about the fact that this was my first ever retweet on my twitter (retweeted by Cadence Weapon himself, Exclaim Magazine's Editor James Keast, and then Exclaim), but this has been getting quite the buzz and deserves some attention here. These "twitter based scandals" have been hitting me quite close to home. I work at Upper Class Recordings home of Cadence Weapon so there is an inherent interest in this one for me.
I'm certain we all recall those crazy 40 minutes in February when twitter exploded with rumours of Gordon Lightfoot's death. A little known fact is that Lightfoot's son is the drummer for Cadence Weapon's new band and these rumours were quite stressful on an unimaginable number of people. The information was retracted by the National Post almost as quickly as it was confirmed.
With the growing importance of social networking sites (twitter, facebook etc) the quality and truthfulness of the information we are being fed has taken a turn for the worse. It is important to consider the source of the information and their credibility, instead of instantly reposting to be one of the first to know about it. This trend of living in the moment is problematic to say the least and the close distance provided by social networking sites is a double edged sword, placing everyone within arm's reach of eachother, but not actually close enough to see how our actions resonate amongst our peers. You are still going to be held accountable for your actions in the digital realm. What still boggles my mind is why you would write a fake review of a show so well attended by other media, and an artist who has a large online presence? I guess there's no such thing as bad publicity.
For the record Chart Attack did retract their review and send an apology to Cadence Weapon. It is relieving to see the credibility of our information sources being challenged and made public and will hopefully make for a more socially conscious media in the future. Consider this a cautionary tale in tweeting.
Kids, listen to your parents, don't believe everything you read.

Up and Coming: The Magic
Alright Toronto I've been hearing a lot of buzz lately over a band I've been loving since last may called The Magic.
Hailing from Guelph, Ontario, The Magic is an indie rock gem with catchy riffs, endearing pianos, and a soulful female singer Sylvie Smith who is underused in my humble opinion. They cast their spell on me when I was driving and heard their song "No Sound" on CBC Radio 3 and couldn't get it out of my head or find it anywhere online so I was forced to buy my first digital download. I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing The Magic live but word on the street is they can coax even the most reluctant hipsters into a non-committal shimmy.
Last I heard their upcoming album is in the mixing stage, and being unsigned this has been an out of pocket expense for the band. Keep your eyes peeled for these guys, they're dedicated to their cause.

Vintage LG

Top: LG bumrushes DJ Mallon from Z103

This really has no place here... but i call this composite "class monkey" for obvious reasons.

Introducing Mamy Rock

At the age of 69 Ruth Flowers from Bristol has taken the European Club Scene by storm. The story of an older person seeking fame by appropriating themselves to a new and hip cultural phenomenon is nothing new (see also: Susan Boyle, Rapping Granny), but her name is what intrigues me here. R. Flowers is the name of the love interest of Scott Pilgrim and hipster extraordinaire. Scott Pilgrim must battle Ramona's seven evil ex boyfriends in order to win her heart. If the movie hadn't already been filmed (spoiler alert, im an extra in it) my vote would be for Mamy Rock because she bathes in irony.

LIL MISS MIXTAPE DOES CMJ FOR ABC

click to see LG in ABC's coverage of CMJ
to americans i will forever be known as the xx fangirl who was too cool to take off her sunglasses. my reluctance to do so was inspired by this young gentleman (video via bagnell):
in reality i was just off an overnight bus from toronto about 3 hours before and i was very clearly overtired. this was the 5th thing i had done since arriving in new york...
- Arrived in New York at 830 am and met up with my old friend Mark for breakfast. He had shaken Obama's hand at an event the night before and was very pleased that his last day in NYC was so meaningful - little did I know I was in for the same
- Got lost in SoLita trying to find my hotel. The taxi was not help I wound up at the SoHo Grand, where rooms cost $600 a night, received quite the mouthful from the concierge there who eventually let me use their internet to figure out where I was supposed to be. I carried my suitcase with 2 cameras and a laptop 6 blocks to the SoHo Solita. Upon my arrival the concierge Peter placed a dozen long stem roses into my blistered hands and showed me to my room.
- Showered.
- Walked to NYU to pick up my CMJ Badge and grab some free swag. On the way I bought a latte at a bookstore and the barista offered me some of her fresh homemade bread. I hadn't eaten since breakfast and scarfed it down in a ravenous feeding frenzy (think Ignatius Reilly selling weenies).
- On my way out of the building I was approached by the reporter from ABC. The rest is history
